Welcome to the Lakelands Community Garden, a flourishing green space where friendships blossom and community spirit grows. We are a passionate group of individuals, families, and friends dedicated to cultivating a vibrant and sustainable future for our neighborhood. Whether you're a seasoned gardener with wisdom to share or a curious beginner eager to learn, we invite you to join us in our little patch of paradise.
Being a part of LCGI offers a wealth of benefits and opportunities to connect, learn, and grow:
Personal Garden Plots: Financial community gardener members have the unique opportunity to lease their own raised garden plot for personal cultivation, with all the delicious produce belonging to them.
Community Contribution & Shared Harvest: Even without a personal plot, members can contribute to our vibrant communal garden areas, sharing in the harvest of produce from areas like potted fruit trees and bush tucker plantings, especially if they contribute or volunteer in those areas. We may even hold produce exchange/swap days for the local community.
Learning and Skill Development: Our commitment to growth extends beyond the plants. We offer diverse training opportunities through LCGI demonstrations and various workshops on topics such as composting, soil maintenance, water-saving techniques, and organic pest control. Some workshops may even be free of charge.
Social Connection: LCGI is dedicated to creating a healthy social ecology where everyone feels safe and included. We foster this through regular working bees, social gatherings, and events – like BBQs, shared picnics, and morning teas – building a strong sense of belonging and friendship among like-minded people.
Safe and Supported Environment: We ensure a safe working environment for all. All new gardeners receive a Health and Safety Induction and are made aware of LCGI garden policies, their rights, and responsibilities, detailed in the Gardener’s Manual & OH&S Booklet. Members also have access to communal tools in the shed (when a committee member is present) and on-site facilities like compost bins and a worm farm for waste reduction. We adhere to all directives from the WA Premier and WA Health Department regarding social distancing and hygiene, including Covid-19 precautions.
Flexible Access: Plot holders benefit from 24/7 walk-in access to the garden through coded gates.
Membership and plot fees contribute directly to operational costs like insurance, water usage, and garden supplies, as well as social gatherings. For any inquiries, you can reach us via our contact form.
Tell your viewers about how the club got started.
Hi! My name is Lako and I'm a Quenda (aka a "Kwanda'), a small marsupial with a long pointed muzzle unique to the southwest of Western Australia. My species usually has a stocky build, with short limbs and neck.
Being a solitary nocturnal feeder, I can be often be observed at times during the day depending on the proximity of my predators. All Quenda are omnivorous and as such we consume a range of organisms such as arthropods, plant roots, tubers and fungi.
We often get mistaken for being rats, but unlike rats, we are a native part of the local ecology, and we have a great sense of humour and love a good belly laugh, which rat's don't.
Because I'm a local resident and know the area very well, the good people at Lakelands Community Garden have adopted me as their club mascot to help bring awareness to the community about the local flora and fauna of the Peel region.
